Adding a Steerable Tail wheel the FT Mustang

This is how I added a steerable tail wheel the FT Mustang. This install could be done on any of the FT tail dragger planes. Need to give a shout out to Alp and his awesome Corsair for the tail wheel idea!

Installation

So first you are going to need an FT Plane and a tail wheel. I found this one on Hobbyking for a couple bucks. It's a nice design. It has a mounting plate, and control horn installed. (You can't see the control horn from this angle)

Here's the underside of the tail section on my FT Mustang

In this picture you can see that once I removed the mounting plate I could put it in place and then trace around it. The hole is then cut about an 1/8" inside my trace mark. I did an angle cut like the top of a pumpkin.

You also want to guess or measure the control horn location and cut a hole it the side of the fuselage.

Then you can hot glue the mount in place.

Then mount the wheel

Then use a small piece of pushrod to make a connection to the rudder control horn. I used a linkage stopper for easy adjustment.

As you can see it makes it so much easier to taxi. I want to do this to all my tail draggers.

Let me know if you guys put this on any other planes. I would love to hear how if works out

Thanks Flynn - Did you have to move battery to adjust for balance on CG? A few grams that far back should have made it tail heavy. - David

I run a 2200 mah and I didn't change the battery placement. You are right tho, it should have changed it, it might have, but I didn't notice it. Maybe it wasn't that big of a change because I run the larger battery to start with.

Very Nice! Might make a good front steering gear too for a Viggen or other? Like hear your thoughts on that. Thanks, 5 back.

C&S, Thats a great idea for the Viggen! Since I think I'm going to work on some retracts for the Viggen next, that give me an idea for the nose wheel. Awesome!
