A Call For Help

by smit6089 | May 21, 2013 | (12) Posted in Challenges

I will start by apologising for posting this here as I know it is not FliteTest related but to be honest with you, I feel like this place is a part of my family. I have communicated with many of you and sharing such a great hobby can't help but bring some of us close together.

Some of you may have heard that a massive Tornado recently struck Moore, Oklahoma leaving 30 square miles leveled to the ground. I live roughly 10 miles South of the destruction path and was very lucky to have no family directly impacted. However this state is my home, and therefore these people are my neighbors and I feel like I have to try and help. I am one, but together we are many.

At it's widest the damage path was 2.25 miles wide, so far a loss of life of 24 of which 9 were children. And unfortunately the search effort has currently only covered roughly 65% of the damage path.

I come here not necessarily asking you to open your wallets but please open your hearts to these people, these families, and these children. If you are religious, please pray, if not, please give them your thoughts.

If you are local, the Red Cross and the various groups of first responders are in desperate need of the following items: Water, Diapers, Formula, Sports Drinks, Ice, Coolers. Starting in the next few days they will be in need  of Gloves, Socks, Trash Bags, Rakes, Shovels, and Socks and Shoes.

If you are not local or you can help out financially the main group the city is asking you to donate to is the American Red Cross. They help victims and first responders both. If you wish to donate, please read the following information.

People who wish to make a donation can support American Red Cross Disaster Relief, which helps provide food, shelter and emotional support to those affected by disasters like the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma and Texas as well as disasters big and small throughout the United States by visiting redcross.org, dialing 1-800-REDCROSS or texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

To the FliteTest crew, If this post needs to be removed due to its non relevance I understand and will take no offence at all, I just feel I needed to try something to help other then the limited items and money I can personally give.

If you wish to see and learn more about this disaster I leave the following links:

Thank you all for your thoughts and your prayers, again these do not need to go to me, they need to be for the individuals and families affected by this disaster.

Thank You!

Smit, thanks for the post. Sorry brother, but I am gonna throw you in the frying pan here, How close are you to the affected area. I might be able to provide some assistance beyond the usual Red Cross donation stuff. I have a spare fifth wheel trailer (31ft bunkhouse Cougar) that could keep a family or two dry, that I could do a temporary loan (30-60 days).

I can have it there in 48 hours. I have a noisy but last time I ran it serviceable 5K worksite generator I am not using that could at least provide some power to it. I would prefer to help a farm family since that is my background. Your close to the scene, maybe you can find something out. Let me know. Matt

I talked to some of the Emergency Management crew today and they said at this moment so few residents are being allowed back into the area they do not need a trailer at this time, however after some of the clean up it may be very much needed. If you don't mind I'll stay in contact with you and when the time comes if it is still available we can make arrangements to meet with a needing family.

i am glad you posted this here and this does strike close to some of us out here i lived in okc for many years and a lot of my family still does and it came within a few miles of my mothers house luckily she was spared but as most oklahomans remember may3 1999 the house she was in now was not so lucky so it was scary for me and my family. I wish that I was able to go down there and help with my local fire department considering i am a volunteer but was unable to do so because of work. I did my best to donate food and clothing and a little money to help but this response on flitetest is amazing and i knew people that lived in the affected area and i know they are very gracious for all the support given. thank you all for your big hearts!!

Quick update! I work as an overnight Assistant Manager at a big box store in Mustang, Oklahoma. I hate to say but many of my associates live pay check to pay check, much like I do, and have very little money to spare. I suggested two nights ago we try to pull our money together and buy a few things and donate to victims and their families that were being housed at the University of Oklahoma and OSU. I was expecting $50 to $75 bucks. Well last night we toppled over the $400 range and my crew donated over 500 pairs of diapers, 5 jars of formula, countless toothbrushes and toothpaste, among other things. I just wanted to send out a HUGE thank you to my crew. They are a fantastic group of people.
