Slope Soaring

Slope soaring is one of the most enjoyable and fun rc disaplines but is not covered very much. So I hope to help you to understand where to fly, when to fly and what to fly. I have been slope soaring for 6 months and I find it the most enjoyable and exicting rc dicapline along with fpv. Here are some tips on how to get into slope soaring.

Slope soaring

Slope soaring is where you are trying to ride along the ridge of rising air which is caused by a hill. This change in windpeed is enough to keep you model in the air.

When starting

When starting you want a glider that is easy to fly and has plenty of lift. My first model was the FT simple soarer. This plane is very stable and its self right ability from the poly diherdral helps you to understand where there is lift and how to ride along the ridge. Gentle lady gliders are also fist slope soarers and share a similar design to the ft simple soarer.

Next step is to choose a suitable location. The best place to start off is on a hill, away from any people with long grass and a clear space infront and behind you. In the case that you loose control when you crash your model there wouldn't be too much damage. Another thing to do is check online to see if the slope is maintained by a club. Many slopes are owned or used by flying clubs. If you are starting it is a good idea to contract the club and meet someone on the slope as they will help to show you the areas of lift.

Finally the weather. When starting 10-15mph wind are most suitable as there will be plenty of lift and your model won't get befferted around too much. Sunny conditions are preferable as your model can easily be seen.

Second Model: Once you have become familiar with the location you will want to progress to a more complex model. Flying wings and scale models are great fun and enable you to develop flying techniques and have fun. The ft versa wing is a great slope soaring wing for having fun with friends and combat. Also aerobatic models like le fish are also great fun as they show a completely diffrent aspect of slope soaring but are alot harder to fly. Also you can visit new flying sites. Beachs with dunes and sea walls usually have good lift but there is the risk of your glider ending up in the sea if your not careful.

Here is myFt Versa wing flying surpisingly well as I decided to cover it in duck tape.

Here is my ST Modles ASW28 scale glider

Here is a video on a perfect day for gliding. Hope you enjoy.

I will for sure try this . It's gonna be a challenge though cause it's really flat where I live. I'll have to try the edges of the woods ,or maybe over a grain field. Main thing , I'll have to hunt for some lift. I fly regular stuff. I have the whole half of my county to myself..

Get a bungee as they are great fun and you get some really good flight times.

Hi Gabriel, I enjoyed reading your guide - lots of good information. The video was good too, but I spotted something which I've had on some of my videos - the plane seems to jerk around and frames seem to be lost. I might be wrong, but I got that same effect when I allowed YouTube to apply screen stabilisation on top of the video I posted. The problem is that the stabilisation is applied to the greater part of the image, which is usually the background, and not to the plane, so the background is smooth, and the plane information is just ignored for a bit until it catches-up with the background - which gives that jerky motion to the plane. It could be your camera is the culprit, applying stabilisation as you are filming and that's creating the problem as you film, but more likely it's the settings for YouTube. It could even be that the stabilisation is being applied by YouTube as an automatic setting you've selected thinking it will improve the quality. I disable all those 'improvements' they don't seem to help with this kind of video. Cheers.

i get that from my "nice" digital camera, as i playback it will jump frames or stutter.
pretty sad as my cheap 808 key fob camera takes beautiful pic's for cheap!

Hi - try disabling the image stabilisation in your "nice" camera - if the 'foreground' object is too small, the image stabilisation software concentrates on the 'background'. In other words it ignores the plane and stabilises the landscape behind it.

Thanks for the tips. I have been wanting to try, but I can't find a slope near me that is forgiving like the one in your video. I am jealous. What a beautiful place to fly.

I have done some reading but do not find any mention of the balance of planes for Slope Soaring. Can you please enlighten me about whether the CG has to change and by how much if it does?? Thank you for any information you can offer.
My hopes are to try slope soaring with a Night Radian
